High flow nozzle
The Robotic Fueling System (RFS) uses different existing “fast refueling systems” for automated refueling of vehicles. These systems can be pressurize or non-pressurized. They work quick, clean and safe. Because of the hermetical lock fuel spilling is kept to an absolute minimum. The RFS works with the Wiggins ZZ9A1, Banlaw BNM800 and the Shaw 181 Nozzle with a fuel rate up to 150 gallons per minute.
How it works
The tank connection (receiver) is situated on the bottom of the tank. This prevents foam forming in the tank and spattering. The high flow nozzle is attached to the receiver. When fuel starts to run with a flow up to 500 liters per minute, it will force air out of the tank through a special valve. When the fuel reaches the level of the valve, it is shut off with a hollow ball in the valve, which starts to float on the fuel. This will consequently hermetically seal off the tank. The fuel will subsequently continue to flow, causing the small amount of air in the top of the tank to increase in pressure quickly. The pressure caused by this in the tank applies a counter pressure on the high flow nozzle, which will then automatically shut off. This nozzle can now be removed and the next truck can be fueled.
These systems are fast, clean and safe. Because of the hermetic sealing, fueling under high pressure and preventing foam forming, fueling times are reduced by 5 times in relation to traditional fueling. The automatic sealing mechanism in combination with the valve ensures that waste is limited to a minimum. The dry break connection of the system guarantees that no fuel is wasted upon disconnecting the high flow nozzle, not even when fuel is still running through the nozzle.
